Summary
The Media Manager will manage all emergency-related media liaison on behalf of the Mali Country Office, and be a focal person for emergency-related media inquiries in the Country Office and from Save the Children International (SCI) and Save US (SCUS). S/he will involve proactive and reactive media work with journalists and news agencies covering the response. The Media Manager will account for the audience needs of SCI and SCUS. S/he will ensure that all media communications are authorized by the Team Leader. The Media Manager will liaise with the Emergency Response Team in order to ensure that key messages are adhered to, and will seek clarification on any politically sensitive matters which may impact upon the response operations.
This post is initially for a minimum period of four weeks.
Responsibilities
Act as a Save the Children spokesperson for the Mali Emergency Response Team and Country Office in all emergency-related issues..
Identify and provide media training to on-the-ground experts as appropriate.
Work closely with regional information and communications team members
Produce message points, press releases, media advisories, blog entries, tweets and other media materials.
Respond to media queries, and organize press conferences, briefings and photo opportunities.
Identify and conduct outreach to on-the-ground members of the global media, including national press; inform SCI and SCUS of outreach to press.
Liaise with field staff, photo/video team and on-the-ground photographers and videographers to ensure photos and videos are captured, proper release forms are signed, log lists and captions are recorded, and assets are sent electronically to lead agency for editing and distribution to member agencies.
Identify and write compelling personal stories.
Liaise with SCI and SCUS media relations team.
Liaise with regional SCI and SCUS advocacy personnel where appropriate.
Provide summary of media calls/contacts for situation report .
Ensure protection of Save the Children International brand and that all procedures, protocols and policies are followed, including guidelines for interviewing children and documenting permission for use of digital images.
Where appropriate, line manage Information and Communications Officers as part of the response. Requirements
Fluency in French and English
Experience as a media manager in an emergency context
At least two years media management experience within Save the Children equivalent peer humanitarian organization.
Proven understanding of international media handling, pitching and media management.
Ability to work effectively and calmly in a high-pressure environment.
Spokesperson training and identifying spokespeople.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
Understanding of the news business and how to identify hooks for particular journalists or media markets.
Proven ability to identify good story ideas.
Ability to prioritize and effectively manage assignments in a timely fashion.
Basic photography skills.
Have undertaken Save the Children approved Safety & Security Training in accordance with member and Alliance required minimum standards.
Willingness to travel to the field as required and to work in remote and possibly insecure environments and basic conditions
Knowledge of local languages and experience in Mali or West Africa desirable.
